LGBTQ Couples Photography in Houston
If you're queer and looking for a photographer in Houston, you're probably not just looking at portfolios. You're reading between the lines, checking whether anyone in their gallery looks like you, and trying to figure out whether a session will be comfortable or whether you'll spend it managing someone else's reaction to you.
I'd rather just tell you directly than make you guess.
I photograph queer couples, I want to photograph more of them, and a session with me isn't going to involve you explaining yourselves.
What I actually mean by that
"LGBTQ friendly" shows up on a lot of photographers' websites and it doesn't always mean much. So here's what it means in practice for a session with me.
I don't assume who's who. No defaulting to one of you as the one who should stand behind the other, no posing one of you as the traditionally masculine half of the frame. We'll figure out what looks good for your specific bodies and your specific dynamic.
I don't pose you in ways you didn't agree to. This is true for everyone I photograph, but it matters more here. I'll suggest things. You can say no to any of them, and I won't need a reason.
I'll use your names and pronouns without making it a moment. You shouldn't have to correct anyone, and you shouldn't have to sit through someone being visibly proud of themselves for getting it right either.
Nothing goes public without your say-so. Some couples want their photos everywhere. Some are out to their friends and not their families, or out in one city and not another. You tell me what's shareable and that's the end of it. If the answer is nothing, that's completely fine and it doesn't change anything about the session.
Where we'd shoot
Houston has plenty of good options and the right one depends on how visible you want to be while we work.
Outdoors in a park gives you space, greenery and good light, and the trade-off is that other people are around. For some couples that's a non-issue. For others it's the whole question, and worth saying out loud when we plan.
A studio session is private by definition. Nobody walks past, nobody looks over, and you can be as affectionate as you want without thinking about it. It also solves the Houston weather problem, which in September is not a small thing. I've done editorial and creative studio work and it's a genuinely good option if you want something stylized rather than a park at golden hour.
Quieter outdoor spots, early mornings and weekday sessions all sit somewhere in between if you want outdoor light with fewer people around.
We'll pick based on what you want the photos to look like and what you're comfortable with.
What to wear
Coordinate rather than match. Pick a palette, usually soft neutrals with one or two muted accent colors, and let each of you wear something that's actually yours within it. Cream, camel, olive, rust, dusty blue and deep burgundy all sit well against Houston greenery and in our warm light.
Wear what you'd actually wear. Not the version of dressed-up that you think portrait photos require. If one of you is in a suit and the other's in a dress, great. If you're both in suits, great. If neither of those categories describes what you wear, also great. The photos look better when people look like themselves, and they look worse when someone spent the whole session uncomfortable in something that isn't them.
Houston practicality: layers you can take off, breathable fabrics, and shoes you can walk in. It stays warm here well into fall.
How a session runs
Before: we talk about what you want the photos for, where you want to shoot, and anything I should know.
During: 30-90 minutes, depending on what you choose. It starts a little awkward for almost everyone and then it loosens up, which is normal and not a sign anything's going wrong. I'll direct you, but mostly toward doing things rather than holding poses, because people look more like themselves when they're moving.
After: sneak peeks in 24 hours, fully edited gallery in 1-2 weeks, delivered online. You decide what's shareable.
Pricing starts at $275.
Get in touch
If this sounds like what you're after, let me know. Tell me a bit about the two of you, what you want the photos for, and whether you'd rather be outdoors or in a studio. I'll come back with dates and pricing.
And if you're reading this and you're still shopping around, that's fine. I'd rather you find the right person than the closest one.
